I painted this one on location (en plein air) on a cloudy (soon to be stormy) day at Torch Bay, in the Grand Traverse Area. I just managed to finish it up as the rain started coming down and got to use my new clip-on umbrella. It worked reasonably well.

“Cloudy Skies at Torch Bay” is the smell of a Northern Michigan beach as a storm approaches, but in visual form. It’s a vignette, a brief impression before the storm sets in. A quick little dispatch from the field.

This painting is perfect for the collector who’s spent enough time “up north” to know that while the idyllic sunny days are nice, the power of a mid-summer storm is beautiful and awesome.
