I’ve been paying a little more attention to the sky at night lately. Between the Northern Lights making regular trips downstate, I’ve also been noticing the moon a little more and I think I understand why it’s inspired so much art, poetry and music. Specifically, the Strawberry Moon in June caught my interest because it was so red and low on the horizon and became so golden as it reached its apex. And I just loved that gold color and thought to myself, “what if it WAS gold?”

And so I got to work. My impression was so big that I needed to use the biggest canvas I had on hand. I wanted to capture that gold as well as the intense colors of the sunset together. The Sandhill Crane in the foreground represents change and transformation. Not only do they migrate thousands of miles every year, they also paint their own feathers in iron-rich mud in the breeding season. This makes them reddish in the spring and they go back to an overall gray color as those feathers molt out. We all have times of change in our lives and I was going through one of those myself. I still am. Maybe you are too.
