Spring is almost here!

For the last few days, I’ve been hearing the birds belting out their morning melodies at dawn. 

The official start of spring is next week.

Are you as excited as I am?

It’s exciting to see the world come back to life and the color flowing back into the landscape. 

To celebrate, I’m making new editions of some of your favorite bird prints:

They are sister prints in that I always print them together. Part of that is convenience because I can print a bunch of circles all at once and then split the pile in half and print one bird on each half, but they were also created together in my mind as two iterations of an experiment.

The idea is to play with the juxtaposition of the elements in the print to invite audience participation in the meaning of the piece.

Which is fancy artist-speak for “to hell with registration, I’m gonna randomly place the sun and the bird on the paper and see what you do about it!”

Each print is unique under normal circumstances, but this run is especially unique from print to print because I couldn’t make two of them the same if I wanted to! 

Sometimes the art is in the little bit of chaos you bring into the process.

And this time, I made these prints with high-quality oil-based ink on really nice thin printmaking paper. I’ve been experimenting with different papers and I’ve found a few that are just a joy to print on.
