Ruby (Reproduction Art Print)
Description
A bold painting of a ruby throated hummingbird with its beak in the flower of a hosta plant.
I made the original painting because I wanted to revisit and extend the Isolation series a little while working with a larger color palette. And I wanted to paint a hummingbird REALLY big. It’s an impulse that still gets me to this day.
I’m going to try and keep it quick so I don’t bore you with the color theory
This painting uses a tetrad–two sets of complementary colors. This gives me a wide range of base hues to work with and a whole lot of shades and tints.
Now, as for painting a hummingbird large, I just kind of like the idea of something so small being so big. The joy of bird watching is often in being able to see these creatures so much closer than we ever would with our naked eyes under normal conditions.
I guess it’s about how emotionally “big” this creature really is, in our hearts. Hummingbirds are nearly a (benign!) cult with how people re-arrange their gardens and plant specific plants and fill specific feeders for these little birds. They take up a lot of space in these people’s hearts!
Hopefully you’ll find that this one takes up enough space in your own heart that you’ll want it to take up that space on your wall!
Yeah, I’m terrible at tying it all together in the end.
