There is an annual plein air painting competition and show in Dexter called Paint Dexter. I applied a little too late and wasn’t invited. So I invited myself and painted Dexter anyway!

This spot in particular is one of my favorite parts of the Border-to-Border trail as it winds around town. It’s a little offshoot called Mill Creek Park that goes through a marsh and follows the Huron River for a little while. I’ve done a few paintings in this area because it’s consistently pretty and interesting. For this painting, I was inspired by the contrast between the scrubby marsh and the larger tree line. The foreground plants were actually out of the view, but I put them in to ground the scene, add interest, and draw your eye further into the painting. Just because I painted it “en plein air,” or on-scene doesn’t mean that I can’t exercise my artistic license!
