The latest in my The Woods series celebrates the middle-child of woodpeckers.

We all love Downy Woodpeckers, the cute little fellas fluttering around the forest.

And we all love the Pileated Woodpecker, the giant roaming the treetops like a dinosaur with a Mohawk

But we don’t always appreciate the ones in between, like the Hairy Woodpecker.

They’re easily mistaken for their smaller relatives, the Downy Woodpecker, but they’re around if you look closely and pay attention
